Tales From the Barside: Entertain Me

    2011 - 09.29

    I breathe fire, motherfucker.

Why do you come to the bar?

In a word (as if that was a problem to me): Entertainment.

People come to the bar – my bar – to be entertained. These people want the pomp and circumstance. They want the gilt tongue with the silver lining. Smoke and mirrors. Optical illusion. If I don’t hear that I’m the best bartender ever I’m not doing my job right.

It’s a dance. A play on words. An ideal.

Why do you sit at my bar? The talk. The flair. The drinks. The straight up and down about the shady as fuck.

People come to my bar to participate.

We are the ambience. You come to the bar to share. Us bar people come to the bar to be around people… other people… other bar people. We have fun at my bar. Cool motherfuckers come to my bar. (more…)

Dignity Therapy Makes Dying Easier for those Facing the End

    2011 - 09.28

A study published earlier this year surveyed the benefits of “dignity therapy” for the terminally ill.

In dignity therapy, patients with six months or less to live share their life stories, memories, and/or regrets with a therapist who then compiles them into a novel-like document. Patients who underwent this type of therapy experienced less sadness in their final days. (more…)

Core Relations: Do You Have a Type?

    2011 - 09.26

    The Buffet, 1884, Jean-Louis Forain

    Person 1: “I like blonde hair/blue eyes/a nice build.”

Person 2: “He has to have some tattoos/defined muscles/a full head of hair.”

Person 3: “She has to have big breasts and legs that never end…”

Person 4: “He/she has to have a good job that pays well, I’m not supporting anyone!”

Person 5: “I’m a gay man, I like real men, no swishy, fem gay guys for me!”

Person 6: “She’s got to be butch, dress masculine, show the world she’s confident in her orientation!”

Talking among friends, the replies to the question posed by the title of this article were as different as the people talking. Everyone seemed to have a preferred “type,” the requirements went from the physical, to the financial, to political and religious affiliations, and everything in between. (more…)

The Things I Find on Craigslist…

    2011 - 09.25

Craigslist seems to be having trouble keeping its hardcore fetishists limited to posting ads in the personals section. Every week I find multitudes of desperate fetishists posting their ads in the gigs section. The only difference there is that they promise to pay for these services. In recent weeks, the South Florida gigs section has been flooded with foot fetish postings, a college student seeking a page turning assistant, and now… a man seeking women to wrestle him.

    S.F. Wrestling World Championships

He at least switched up his posts. And since he didn’t write multiple paragraphs trying to explain his situation, he successfully comes off less desperate.

I have to wonder though, is he looking for a new “Chyna” from WWF (WWE) or is he hoping some powder puff football star will answer his prayers? It’s so annoying when the fetishists request the people answering the ad to send pictures when they should be the one showing US the pictures! I want to know what a man with a female wrestler obsession looks like!

Anyway, this is pretty straight forward. Enjoy:

Police Officers: With Us or Against Us?

    2011 - 09.23

Police officers are public servants. They are paid by us to work for us. For as long as anyone remembers there have been instances of power hungry cops, corrupt cops, racist cops, brutal cops… you name it. Citizens have remained tolerant because time and time again they have found that courts will take an officer’s word over theirs anytime.

Before, there was little one could do about it. People could picket or rally to get certain officers off the force, but when it came down to it, the power of a single citizen was nil.

Luckily, technology has made every person able to record their world. From digital cameras to digital phones, to cell phones with all those things built in, citizens now have the power to document scenes and provide hard evidence against officers. (more…)

With DADT’s End, Recognition, Respect, and Challenges

    2011 - 09.22

This Tuesday marked the last day of the Clinton-era policy “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) for gays in the military.

For 17 years, gays and lesbians in the military were not permitted to reveal their non-straight status, lest they make the straight folk uncomfortable and so face termination from the service.

Now, as President Obama makes provisions for the advancement of the LGBT community, gays and lesbians who were honorably discharged under DADT celebrate across the country. Some are still passionate enough to return to the military corps that asked them to leave after coming out. This time, however, these men and women will have nothing to hide or explain about their very personal lives.

Although it took the military and the government almost two decades to agree that there is no reason to exclude gays from the services, the repeal of DADT shows not only presidential support, but the progress of the LGBT rights movement.

Major news outlets like NPR, the Washington Post, and branches of FOX News have reported on the enormity of the repeal.

In a society that previously listed homosexuality as a mental disorder (and where some people still do), allowing LGBT soldiers to serve is the sign of a bright future for the movement.

Breaking the barriers of the most patriarchal institution enough to admit not just women, but also gay men was no easy task. And just because now heterosexuality is not required in the armed forces, the plight of gays and lesbians won’t be a piece of cake, either.

Already, the repeal of DADT is getting reactions from supporters of the policy.

Still, the fruit of years of activism is savored today, and that triumph alone gives strength enough to go on.

In the Fight Against AIDS, Glowing Cats Play Major Role

    2011 - 09.22

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. FIV. The Cat Killer. Every year, this feline equivalent of HIV afflicts and terminates millions of cats, a large number of them feral.

This September, researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, are developing ways to protect cats from the virus. So far, they have bred some very rare glow-in-the-dark kittens they hope will resist feline AIDS.

The glowing kitties are products of a gamete-targeted lentiviral transgenesis, or altered cat eggs, reports the Mayo Clinic. (more…)

    Miyagawa Isshô-Spring Pastimes

Visiting the nail salon can be a learning experience, at least for me. Not only do you get to sit and wait for a service you pay for, you also have the dubious pleasure of involuntarily eavesdropping on a myriad conversations going on around you.
For some reason, women at all the nail salons I’ve frequented think nothing of broaching all kinds of sensitive subjects in a regular tone of voice, no matter who is or is not listening, including children.
Oh, the things I’ve heard…! Normally, I’m not actively paying attention, because I’m reading. My trusty Kindle and I rarely part company, as I’m always on the lookout to take advantage of any opportunity to increase my reading time. This time, though, I was unwillingly pulled away from a very entertaining read by the topic being discussed by the two women sitting next to me. With their toddlers sitting in strollers right next to them, no less. (more…)
