Last Saturday, the talk here at AK187 was all about kittens. And why not? They’re cute, funny, and just a little bit un-smart.
But today, let’s focus on one of the current political debates: birth control. I’d like to juxtapose the proximity of Valentine’s Day (a day of love and, presumably, lovemaking, which leads to conception) and our politicians’ recent bouts of anti- and pro-contraceptive stances.
The Catholic Church has just been granted a plan that will not require the Church itself to provide birth control in its insurance coverage for its workers. The insurers will now have to approach individuals and offer prescription birth control free of charge.
The Church has some arguments against this, of course, but the focus here is that these discussions are taking place on the eve of a love-focused holiday.
In my opinion, there couldn’t have been a better time to bring up these issues, as it will remind frothy teenagers everywhere to put a cap on their soldier, as they say. Okay, maybe not teenagers — they may not be the group that’s paying the most attention — but people will have a friendly reminder to sex safely.
We’d like to hear your thoughts on the matter.
